Empire Avenue Had Programming “Backdoor” To Evade FTC Regulations #EaV #SocialMedia

According to Brand Manager/Admin Lynn O’Connell of Empire Avenue (@omdirect), mission grading would not have been introduced but for the FTC crackdown on on pay per click disclosures.

Lynn OConnell equity

However, Empire Avenue had a “backdoor” that allowed anyone with the knowledge to evade that grading procedure.

What was the “backdoor”?  62 characters used in the mission description.

You were not suppposed to be able to request specific actions be completed to suffice as a mission completion according to Empire Avenue missions rules, but this “backdoor” allowed those to be bypassed.

Here Empire Avenue Brand Manager/Admin Richard Townsend confirms the official policy.

Cant ask for rt's likes etc - Copy

WakeUpNow was able to promote a mission from Randy Garcia’s (another Empire Avenue leader) twitter timeline, with a specific action required to consider the mission completed.

Testing the code confirmed that empire avenue rules instituted to comply with FTC regulations could be bypassed.

Malthaus test 1

The mission was live, and had graded an A.

Malthaus test 2

The code was independently verified by other customers as well.

Backdoor Test Grade A

The only question at this point is if the “backdoor” is still coded into the current mission system on EmpireKred as they purchased Empire Avenue and renamed it a few months ago.

So while customers wanted mission grading stopped, those in the know could bypass the mission grading system by use of the code.

The Abuse of Customers By Empire Avenue Reached Absurd Heights #socialmedia #socialsales #custserv

After reporting Gareth Davies to Empire Avenue for cyberbullying of course I thought that responsible parties would immediately take care of what was occuring.

After all he had a history of doxing and threatening customers.

Boy was I wrong.

Rather than deal with his cyberbullying, he was allowed to cyberbully me, with Chris Sandys and others joining in with falsehoods and an astounding assortment of lies.

The most astonishing thing done was the setting up of a website dedicated to attacking other customers, along with associated social media accounts.

It was put up shortly after Gareth Davies tweeted his intent to bully me, his customer, with “games” to soon begin.

(The website has now been taken down by the originators.)

And thus, @lqqkatthis was born, and soon suspended by Twitter.

Capture

lqqkatthis suspended

It’s the @lkkqatthis account commenting in between Opinionated Man’s “message” to me about his feeling a need to kill, here.

opinionated-man-threats

Gareth Davies, a leader at a company I was a customer of (suspended by Twitter for tweeting my private information, violent threats, and warned yet again for violent threats) was kind enough to lend @lqqkatthis advice when they had difficulties with their website.

Tweet to Lqqkatthis

And then Gareth, and others, began disseminating the lies that were published on that website.

This content in the tweet isn’t a tweet, but Gareth’s happiness at scaring customers of Empire Avenue’s is well known.

The lies:

I refused not to blog about Gareth’s abuse of customers as requested by Michael Q. Todd.

Consumers have a right to know that such a person is a leader at Empire Avenue, and routinely attacks customer of Empire Avenue’s (now EmpireKred) and Empire Avenue does nothing to stop him.

Is this what Empire Avenue Brand Manager/Admin Steven L. Johnson is teaching at UVA Mcintire School of Business?

How to attack your own customers and ignore the danger posed by a cyberbully that you most frequently correspond with on Twitter?

A cyberbully that cannot be blocked, thus negating a key @safety feature of Twitter’s?

A company that Empire Avenue relies upon for their own business?

All for a man that threatens his own customers, women and children?

Why not just stop the cyberbully, Gareth Davies?

Gareth Attacks Child

This account isn’t me.  But there’s no hesitation on Gareth’s part to abuse his own customer to try to attack me (also his customer.)

Keith Gill Now We Know

No spin zone here….

No obsession either.  I told Gareth I’d be reporting and did so.  It still astounds me that Empire Avenue refused to stop his abuse.

And that leaders and Team Leader Nance Larson then participated in that abuse?  Truly troubling.

I was banned for blogging about Keith Gill’s false advertising.  Imagine that?

I remain appalled that Empire Avenue allowed Keith Gill to promote demonstrably false information through their “missions” system, even after reporting the falsehoods directly to Admin Robby Ball.

Keith Gill Thanks

Stand up for bullying your own customers?

What’s sad is Omar Habayeb is both a leader at Empire Avenue (now EmpireKred) and an educator as well.

One wonders what they are teaching….

No, I called Gareth Davies a bully because he is  unblockable and was doxing, cyberstalking and harassing others on Twitter and elsewhere.

Update 11/4/2015:  We’ve confirmed that Steven L. Johnson is not listed as a “Brand Manager/Admin” on the EmpireKred website.  He remains a leader of EmpireKred.

Steven Johnson - Copy

Steven L. Johnson, Ph.D (@stevenljohnson) is an educator, and a former Brand Manager/Admin at social media gaming company, Empire Avenue (since renamed EmpireKred).

Why would a Brand Manager/Admin not respond to a safety threat to his own customer?

This negates a key safety provision of Twitter’s and leaves Gareth Davies free to attack and harass customers of Empire Avenue’s (or whoever else he abuses.)

gareth-davies-cannot-be-blocked-must-be-muted-negating-twitters-recommended-security-procedure-10292014-copy

EmpireKred has not made clear if Professor Johnson still holds that title, as Kred has not been forthcoming with much information subsequent to their buying Empire Avenue .

Edit 11/4/2015:  Confirmed Professor Johnson is no longer listed as a Brand Manager/Admin on the Empire.Kred site.

One customer describes the takeover as “creepy.”

Things Have Changed

Professor Johnson authored the following study, entitled…

The Emergence of Online Community Leadership

while employed at Temple University.

Professor Johnson was asked  the following direct question as to whether people from Empire Avenue were involved in the research.

Professor Johnson failed to provide a direct response.

Capture

Were Empire Avenue customers involved?

This is an entirely fair question given the documented history of Empire Avenue.

According to Chris Voss of The Chris Voss Show, nationally recognized social media expert,

Empire Avenue Fail 5 post overview: Over 5 posts on my blogs I documented issues with Empire Avenue, from their rogue volunteers, running a “wall of shame” on Brands, attacking Brands reputations online, not answering complaints, having a “goon squad” of endorsed volunteers attacking customers who complained, refusing to discipline internally thereby encouraging more attacks on Brands, etc. What I witnessed was the worst travesty in the annals of customer service I have ever seen. After a month of private discussions with EA to change things, I went public. Only then did they begin to change, but the attacks on me and others grew by their “goon squad.” In the end, I went to EA’s Angel Investor and EA had to shut down its Chat Room and Chat Mod “goons squad.” EA shamelessly has never apologized or produced it damning chat logs as promised by their CEO. This is one of those posts, you can read the rest by Search in the upper right for ‘Empire.’ Don’t play EA or if you do save your REAL money.

AND:

A COMPANY NEEDS TO PROTECT ITS CUSTOMERS! I think we can all agree it’s morally wrong for customers to be abused for complaints and speaking out. Its even sicker when those people are allowed to continue and the company does nothing.

Professor Johnson was mentioned in, and apparently ignored Gareth Davies (@me_gareth) admission that he cannot be blocked on Twitter.

Obviously this raises many profound ethical questions for Professor Johnson, at least.

Have Empire Avenue customers unknowingly been “observed” and their reactions included in any research conducted by Professor Johnson?

When does “observation” become “participation”?

Is it when you are in an authority position at Empire Avenue as not only a “Leader” (Professor Johnson’s Empire Avenue profile has the “leadership” badge), but an appointed Brand Manager/Admin?

Is your child (or anyone else) “fair game” if they happen to be a customer of Empire Avenue’s and a student at the university at which he now teaches, the University of Virginia McIntire School of Commerce?

Why would an authority figure, and business school educator ignore that the business he’s a Brand Manager/Admin at is abusing their customers on a social media platform whose market they rely upon for their business?

Gareth Davies has been suspended by Twitter for tweeting a customers private information and violent threats.

He has been warned for non violent threats.

Additionally, Team Leader Nance Larson (@nancelarson) participated in doxing a customer, Leader Chris Sandys (@usafa_93) was warned for non violent threats, and Keith Gill (@Digitalkeith) had his twitter account locked.

Gareth Davies was a central figure in that travesty of abuse of their own customers which Professor Johnson ignored.

Talk of killing and “big mouths”, and Keith Gill is mentioned in these tweets…

What’s astounding is that the person being threatened, myself, is a customer of Empire Avenue’s being subjected to this tremendous abuse on Twitter.

Such abuse caused a CA DoJ investigation into Twitter and the SF DA’s office twice opened files due to the abuse, of which Mr. Gill is a part.

Empire Avenue’s concern for the only safety and cybersecurity (lack thereof) of their own customers is probably  best illustrated by these tweets.

Gareth Davies (@me_gareth) cannot be blocked, which renders a key safety provision of Twitter’s moot.

And yet Empire Avenue Brand Manager/Admin Steven L. Johnson has no comment or concern about the ongoing harassment and abuse of Empire Avenue customers by Gareth Davies.

Gareth has an extrensive record of doxing and attacking other customers of Empire Avenue’s having been suspended for tweeting a customers private information and violent threats.

Additionally he has been warned for violent threats.

For Example:

Gareth’s abuse of Empire Avenue customers on Twitter an extremely large part of the aforementioned investigations by the CA DoJ and SF DA’s office.

According to Chris Voss of the Chris Voss Show, nationally recognized social media expert,

Over 5 posts on my blogs I documented issues with Empire Avenue, from their rogue volunteers, running a “wall of shame” on Brands, attacking Brands reputations online, not answering complaints, having a “goon squad” of endorsed volunteers attacking customers who complained, refusing to discipline internally thereby encouraging more attacks on Brands, etc. What I witnessed was the worst travesty in the annals of customer service I have ever seen. A company is responsible for overseeing its reps and volunteers that are endorsed and sanctioned by the company, in making sure they are in line with a Company code of conduct. Let me ask you something, if you were to go into Walmart or Nordstoms, make a complaint with Customer Service would you expect or allow yourself to continually be attacked and bullied by their Company volunteer staff? Then over a month it continues and gets worse the more you complain? I’m warning everyone with no question to avoid Empire Avenue. If your Brand comes under the ire of one of their rogue Chat Mods, Empire Avenue can’t protect the bashing of your Brand and doesn’t seem to care in my opinion. I’m telling people to run from this company, keep your money or ask for a refund. This is a perfect example of a social media fail everyone should be blogging about and making lesson plans on!

Actually, it’s unclear if Mr. Johnson remains a Brand Manager/Admin as Kred hasn’t been very forthcoming with information about the changes made.

One customer describes Kred’s takeover of Empire Avenue as “creepy”.

The same customer reports he pushed “very hard” for bug fixes and got punished.

So it seems clear that the approach Empire Avenue had to customer service prior to Kred’s taking over continues to be in place.

Of course one has to wonder what Mr. Johnson’s concept of customer service is as he overlooks that Leader Gareth Davies (@me_gareth) cannot be blocked on Twitter, which negates a key safety feature.

It’s astonishing that a business that relies on Twitter’s marketplace would do such a thing to a key safety feature.

The EmpireKred “Goon Squad” (Abused By the Goon Squad? The SF DA’s Office Can Help)

According to Chris Voss of the Chris Voss Show, nationally recognized social media expert, Empire Avenue (now EmpireKred) has a “Goon Squad.”

I have met these “goons”, and their willingness to engage in attacks on their own customers not only on Empire Avenue (EmpireKred) itself (which is crazy enough who attacks their own customers and expects to stay in business?) but across other social  media platforms triggered a CA DoJ inquiry into Twitter (the only platform that allowed their abuse after I reported it) and the San Francisco DA’s office twice intervened.

When I reported the abuse initially, Empire Support refused to act, indicating they valued their privacy and they weren’t responsible for “someone” tracking me, their customer, down on the internet.

And yes, they actually accused me of abuse for reporting others abuse…  This is astonishing.

I had no problem supplying my real name to Twitter when I filed a DMCA takedown request against Gareth Davies for his abuse of my copyright, and with the SF DA’s office and CA DOJ.

These are some of the still visible tweets.  The worst offenses were moderated by twitter and the tweets deleted.

Remember, I’m a customer of Empire Avenue’s (acknowledged by support), Gareth Davies is a leader of that corporation, and they refused to act to stop his abuse.

Empire Avenue’s astonishing refusal to stop the abuse of myself, their own customer, simply confirms what Chris Voss has earlier documented.  The existence of a “Goon Squad.”

These fine individuals were named in legal papers (case denied) seeking to silence my blogging about Empire Avenue.  That attempt failed.

Leader Teril Gidwitz was also named, but I have seen no public utterances about myself from her mouth.  The only thing she did was accuse another of potential fraud on Empire Avenue’s forums without supporting evidence.

However when I asked her to stop communicating with me, she did so.

What’s a “Leader” at Empire Avenue?

Amazingly enough, Empire Avenue Brand Manager Admin Steven L. Johnson was mentioned in a tweet where Gareth Davies admits that he cannot be blocked, which negates a key safety feature of Twitter’s.

And Keith Gill (AKA #DigitalKeith)?  He’s a magnet for violent people I guess…

Mr. Gill gets mentioned in a lot of intimidating tweets.

This is what Twitter General Council Vijaya Gadde has to say about abuse.

This is, to put it mildly, not good enough. Freedom of expression means little as our underlying philosophy if we continue to allow voices to be silenced because they are afraid to speak up. We need to do a better job combating abuse without chilling or silencing speech.

And this is what they still allow…

Apparently some types of threats, bullying and intimidation is ok.

Having never threatened anyone anywhere at anytime, I’m astonished that Twitter still allows this to occur.

When seemingly responsible authority will not act, it’s clear that this is a business that is out of control.

Empire Avenue advertised their leaders package on twitter and other social media platforms as follows,

“Did you wonder WHY the community was called Empire Avenue Leaders? It’s simple. Starting now, the Leaders are RUNNING Empire Avenue’s marketing, recruitment, and retention programs. The technical staff will continue to support the platform, manage the database, and provide normal tech support. Beyond that – it’s up to US to chart the marketing course to get to 2000 leaders. Longer term, Leaders may have an even greater influence on the platform’s future functionality.

This is a truly amazing opportunity. The Empire Avenue Leaders will develop and test new marketing messages, new ways to recruit – and retain – new members, and new ways to interact with each other. Plus, we can explore new ways to make the game fun and rewarding for all.”

It’s amazing that the leadership of EmpireKred will not deal responsibly with the abuse and predatory acts agains their own customers.

The EmpireKred “Goon Squad” took their abuse on Twitter against customers, which triggered a CA DOJ investigation into Twitter’s handling of the matter, and the San Francisco District Attorney’s office intervened twice.

With Kred purchasing Empire Avenue and changing the name to EmpireKred, one would have hoped that a change of leadership would take place, however customers still report witnessing cyber bullying and being suspended for asking Kred to fix bugs.
